As I make my way out of the Police Station I bump into a rock hard body. It was Matt. My eyes widen in shock to find him here. Then the realization hit me that Matt has bailed me out.

“Are you alright?” he asks. He hugs me tight.

“I have been better. How did you know?”

“I have been trying to find you. I put a Google alert on your name in case anything came up. And something came up.” He shows me the headline on his phone, “Former Stripper Wife Suspected In Death Of Banker Paul Morrison.”

I feel sick. Someone has dug up my past, and it was splashed for the whole world to read.

“There was a small mention in the article about a homicide linked arson and…” he says, squeezing my hand. “I flew in as soon as I heard. I am sorry about your husband…”

“I did not do it.” I say defensively, angry, searching his face for any trace of accusation.

“Baby, I know you didn’t. We are going to pull through this together.”

“We?”

“Ï am an attorney Latoya, I want to represent you. Are you going to run away from my again?”

For a moment, pride wells up inside me. I want to push Matt away, to stomp off stubbornly and tell him I can do this all by my damn self. I want to put the memory of Paul between us, use any excuse, but reason wins over ego and I know I need him.

“I have just lost my husband…,” I trail off.

“I know,” he says. “At least as a friend, for old time’s sake.” He smiles and I remember our care free love.

“The stripping,” I begin to explain.

“It doesn’t matter”.

I fall into his arms and begin crying. We embrace for a long time.

He leads me to his Mercedes-Benz parked in the station’s lot.

“Let us go get your things. I have a small place in uptown Washington where you will be safe.” He says revving up the engine.

I give him directions to my apartment where I throw a few clothes into a Louis Vuitton mini travel bag. I pack foundation, perfume, some mascara, and my favorite ruby rich Milani lipstick. I ask him to make one more stop, and he drives me to Grandma’s house.

“Are you ok child?” Grandma Lily asks as I step out of the car.

“It is going to be alright Grandma. There are a few bad things happening to me right now but I need you not to worry,” I say. “This is Matt, he is a powerful attorney he is going to make sure everything is alright.”

Grandma peers at Matt and her face crinkles into a smile.

“I always wondered what happened to you.” Matt had met Grandma Lilly when she visited me at George Washington University. She had teased me endlessly about “dipping my cookies into the vanilla jar” as she had called it.

I left them to the banter and ran into the house to look for Martha and Matthew.

Matt’s small place turned out to be a two-story mansion.
